'I just can't seem to get dressed'

Comedian Jason Stuart on his father, 'Will and Grace' and his upcoming Cincinnati show

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Jason Stuart answered the phone from his Los Angeles apartment admitting that he had no idea where the day had flown, because he was still in his underwear.

Assuring him that I didn't have one of those newfangled videophones, we began a conversation about the stand-up comic's recent work, his upcoming gig at the 11th annual Out and Equal Workplace Summit in Cincinnati and his ongoing sagas-personal and professional.

'You know it's serious when they cancel the Madonna concert in L.A.'

Stuart seems to be doing a lot of things in his underwear these days, including appearing as such on the cover of his new CD, Gay Comedy Without a Dress.

"I just can't seem to get dressed," he claims, admitting that his new look is definitely getting him a lot more attention.

Having caught him in his skivvies, I ask whether I should call him back at a better time.

"No," he replies, "I am supposed to meet with my dad, and anything to prevent that is good."

Stuart is only halfjoking, but does admit that his father still doesn't get his brand of humor.

''Why can't you be more like Jackie Mason,' he always says to me." Apparently Stuart's father finds his comedy and his shenanigans as annoying today as he did when his son was little. "My mother is the absolute opposite," Stuart adds.

Stuart has been busy most of this year releasing the album and promoting it. While it is available

at bookstores, it is selling remarkably well at his web site (www.jasonstuart.com).

"I did the CD because I thought it was time," he said, “and I am thrilled with the incredible reviews it has received."

Stuart has also been making the rounds on TV shows, including Will and Grace. "They work really, really hard and I have been really excited to be a part of it."

When asked which character was his favorite, he answered, "I like them all for different reasons."

"I like Jack because he's a whore, and those are my favorite kind of people," he

joked. "I love Will because he's so cute and sexy in that Cary Grant kind of way, and he's so gorgeous and he doesn't even know it. Grace reminds me of every girl I have ever known who just can't seem to get it together. And Karen is hysterical, but I would never want to meet her."

Why would he shy away from a face-toface with Karen? "Well," he said, “she's an alcoholic and a drug addict and she reminds me of my mom when I was a kid, when she used to take sleeping pills and Valium."

Another thing that allows Stuart to vent is Showtime's Queer as Folk, something he calls "a Melrose Place for gay people." Stuart, like many, believes that the British incarnation of the show was far superior with better writing and better acting. "Peter Paige is the best thing about the American series," he said.

"But, I had no idea," he said, sarcasm dripping heavily from his tongue, “that all the men in Pittsburgh were so damn gorgeous."

"When I was there," he continued, "it was a large gaping hole with people smoking in it."

However, were Stuart to be offered a part on the show he would take it in a heartbeat. "But they won't have me because they shoot in Canada, and other than some of the principals, they don't use Americans," he explained. "I don't want to have to be naked,” he joked in a serious tone when asked if he would do nudity for the show, "I'm Jewish and have my underwear painted on!"

He continues to tour with his stand-up routines, some of which were canceled due to the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. At a time like this, comedy may seem irrelevant if not irreverent.

"There's nothing funny about it," said Stuart, getting very serious for the first time during the interview. "But I have to work, I have to do my show."

For him "it has been the most surreal experience" and he has "been a little depressed."

"You know it's serious," he said, "when they cancel the Madonna concert in L.A." Stuart will be entertaining at the dinner at the Out" and Equal Workplace Summit on October 5 in Cincinnati. The event is expected to attract more than 500 members of GLBT employee resources groups, human resource professionals, straight allies and others who advocate for LGBT equity in he workplace.

"I am very excited about this event," Stuart says, “because all these gay and

bian people are getting together. The idea

that all these GLBT folk in Fortune 500 companies and beyond will be there and out and proud is fantastic."

It's so great that we exist and that there is a group that supports us," he concluded. For more information about the summit see Out and Equal's web site, www.outandequal.org, or call 415-
